About Dr. Spencer Welch

People want to do great work. Great leaders create the conditions for them to do it. I help leaders develop those conditions.

Early in my career as a teacher and coach, I noticed something that would stay with me for the rest of my life. I saw over and over again that students made their best efforts when at least one person believed in them and took the time to encourage them. And then I came across a quote from Goethe that reinforced what I had already learned: “Treat people as if they already are what they ought to be and you make it possible for them to act their very best.”

I carried that conviction into every role that followed — leading schools, developing leaders across a large district, and eventually preparing the next generation of principals at a major research university — and found that it held up in every context.

Today I work with leaders in education, nonprofits, and private business — helping them understand what their particular situation is asking of them, and how to bring out the best in the people they lead.
